Meaning of weeds

On a maize farm, some plants grow where the farmer does not want them. Such plants are called weeds.

A weed is a plant growing where it is not wanted.

This means that a plant becomes a weed because of where it grows. Even maize growing among planted onions can be a weed if the farmer does not want it there.

Examples on Nigerian farms

Common weeds include spear grass, goat weed, Tridax and nut grass. You may see them on cassava farms, vegetable beds and school farms.

Characteristics of weeds

Weeds have features that help them grow, spread and survive. However, not every weed has all these features.

Fast growth: Many weeds grow quickly. They can cover the soil and crowd young crops.

Many seeds: Many weeds produce plenty of seeds. This helps them spread widely.

Easy seed dispersal: Wind, water, animals and human activities can carry weed seeds to new places.

Seed dormancy: Some weed seeds remain alive in the soil without germinating for a long time. They germinate when conditions become suitable.

Vegetative reproduction: Some weeds grow from plant parts other than seeds. Spear grass spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, while nut grass can grow from tubers.

Ability to regrow: Some weeds grow again after cutting if their underground parts remain alive.

Survival in different conditions: Many weeds can grow in poor soil or survive periods of little rainfall.

Strong competition: Weeds compete with crops for water, nutrients, sunlight and space. This can reduce crop yield.

Remember for your examination

A weed is not always a useless plant. Some weeds have uses, but they are unwanted where they grow. Their ability to spread and survive often makes them difficult to control.
