Meaning of Agricultural Extension

A farmer may need help to control pests, improve soil or store crops safely. Agricultural extension brings useful farming knowledge and skills to farmers and helps them use these ideas.

Agricultural extension is an informal educational process through which farmers learn improved methods of farming to increase their productivity and improve their standard of living.

Simply put, extension means teaching farmers better ways to farm without making them attend a regular school. For example, a maize farmer in Kaduna can learn better seed spacing on the farm.

Who Helps the Farmer

An extension agent is a trained person who teaches and advises farmers. The agent also takes farmers’ problems and needs to researchers for possible solutions.

How Extension Works

An extension agent may visit farms, demonstrate a farming practice or teach a farmers’ group. Farmers can also receive advice through radio programmes and mobile phones.

For example, an extension agent may show cassava farmers in Ogun State how to select healthy stem cuttings and plant them correctly. The farmers can practise what they learn.

Importance of Agricultural Extension

Spreads improved farming methods: Farmers learn about improved seeds, correct spacing and better ways to rear animals.

Increases farm production: Advice on planting time, soil care and feeding livestock can help farmers produce more crops and animal products.

Reduces farm losses: Farmers learn how to control pests and diseases and store produce properly. For example, cowpea farmers can learn safer storage methods.

Improves farmers’ income and living conditions: Better production, lower losses and useful market information can help farmers earn more money.

Links farmers with researchers: Extension agents explain research findings to farmers and report farmers’ problems to research centres.

Encourages cooperation: Extension agents can guide farmers to form cooperative societies so they can buy inputs and market produce together.

Remember for Your Exam

Agricultural extension is mainly education and advice, not the free supply of money or farm inputs. It helps farmers understand and use better practices to improve farming and family life.
