Introduction to Reproductive System

For most big living things like animals and plants to have children, they go through a special process called sexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction is the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote which develops into a new individual.

This simply means the father and mother must bring their seeds together to make a new baby.

The special seeds or cells that the male and female use for this work are called gametes.

Gametes are the mature sexual reproductive cells, which are the sperm in males and the egg or ovum in females.

Think of gametes as the special starting materials that carry life from the parents.

When the male seed and the female seed join together, they create one single new cell called a zygote.

A zygote is the single cell formed by the fusion of male and female gametes.

This zygote is the very first stage of a new life before it starts growing.

This one small zygote will then divide many times until it grows and turns into a complete living thing.

All these steps are only possible because of the reproductive system.

The reproductive system is the group of organs in a living thing that work together for the purpose of producing offspring.

It is the set of body parts that allow animals and plants to give birth to their kind.

There are two main types of this system: the male reproductive system and the female reproductive system.

These two systems are not the same because they have different shapes and they do different jobs in the body.

Key points

  • Sexual reproduction in most multicellular organisms involves a complex process.
  • Gametes are specialized male and female reproductive cells.
  • The fusion of male and female gametes forms a single cell called a zygote.
  • A zygote undergoes multiple divisions to develop into a new organism.
  • The reproductive system facilitates the entire process of reproduction and differs between males and females in structure and function.
