Sensory Receptors

Everything that stays alive can feel when things change around them, and we call these changes stimuli.

Stimuli are changes in the environment of an organism which can be detected by the organism.

This means if something changes outside or inside your body, your body will notice it.

These changes can be from a touch, from light, from chemicals, or from heat.

Even though most cells in your body can feel things, some special cells are built just to catch specific types of changes.

Sensory receptors are specialized cells which detect specific types of stimuli.

These are special messenger cells that pick up news about what is happening.

There are many of these receptors in a person's body to help watch how the body is doing inside.

Mechanoreceptors are special cells that feel when something touches, pushes, or moves them.

Mechanoreceptors are sensory receptors that are sensitive to mechanical stimuli.

These cells help you feel pressure or vibrations.

Thermoreceptors are special cells that tell the body when it is hot or cold.

Thermoreceptors are sensory receptors that respond to heat stimuli.

They help you know if your tea is too hot or if the weather is cold.

Chemoreceptors are special cells that pick up different types of chemicals.

Chemoreceptors are sensory receptors that are sensitive to chemical stimuli.

These are the cells that help you smell food or taste your soup.

Photoreceptors are special cells that catch light so you can see.

Photoreceptors are sensory receptors that detect light stimuli.

These cells are found in your eyes to help you see colors and shapes.

These receptors change the things they feel into small electric signals.

When these signals get to the brain, the brain explains them as things like pictures, sounds, smells, and tastes.

The body parts that carry these special receptors are what we call sense organs.

Sense organs are specialized cells, tissues, or organs of the body that can receive, perceive, or detect stimuli.

They are the tools the body uses to pick up information from outside.

They send this information to the brain and the spinal cord.

Sense organs help us know what is going on in the world and help us move around safely.

Humans have five basic senses:

1. Eyes for sight or vision.

2. Skin for touch.

3. Ears for hearing.

4. Nose for smell.

5. Tongue for taste.
