Introduction to Pests
A pest is any living thing that brings sickness or destroys other living things.
A pest is an organism that carries disease or causes damage to other organisms.
This means if an insect or animal spoils your things or makes you sick, it is a pest.
Why Pests Are Bad
We do not like pests because they eat our farm crops and make our farm animals sick.
Pests are seen as harmful or unwanted because they can damage agriculture by feeding on crops or parasitizing livestock.
They are enemies to farmers because they reduce the food we have to eat or sell.
They can cause physical harm to humans, animals, and crops.
Types of Pests
There are two main types of pests: crop pests and livestock pests.
Crop pests are those that trouble plants on the farm.
Insects such as grasshoppers, mealybugs, and beetles

Birds
Rodents like rats and squirrels
Monkeys
Nematodes, which are tiny worms in the soil
Humans, especially when they steal or destroy crops
Livestock pests are those that trouble animals like cows, goats, and chickens.
Some live on the skin of the animal to suck blood.
Livestock pests consist of ectoparasites, like ticks and mites, which live on the outside of animals.
Other pests live inside the belly or organs of the animal.
They also include endoparasites, such as liver flukes, roundworms, and tapeworms, which live inside the animals.
Other Ways to Group Pests
We can also group pests by whether they are plants or animals.
Pests can also be classified as plant pests, often referred to as weeds, or animal pests, which can include insects, birds, rodents, monkeys, humans, or nematodes.
This simply means that even unwanted grass in your garden is a type of pest.
