Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

ECOWAS is a group that West African countries formed to help each other grow their businesses and money. ECOWAS is a sub-region organization formed by fifteen West African countries in 1975. It is a meeting of neighbor countries who want to make West Africa better for everyone.

Lagos was the first head office before they moved it to Abuja. Now, sixteen countries are members because Cape Verde joined them. The big reason for ECOWAS is to make members work together so that West Africa and the whole of Africa can grow big. Its main aim is to promote economic co-operation among members geared towards the development of the sub-region and African continent. It means they want every member country to succeed together.

Aims and Objectives of ECOWAS

1. Working together and growing: This means countries helping each other so everyone can have a better life. Promotion of co-operation and development among member nations: This is the major reason behind the formation of ECOWAS; the need for co-operation and development. They want to improve everything from farming to schools so people can live well.

2. Making rules similar: This means different countries trying to use the same kind of plans for things like money and farming. Harmonization of policies: The commission also aims at harmonizing the different sectoral policies of member states. For example, they want agricultural and money rules to be the same across West Africa.

3. Removing blocks so people can travel: This means making it easy for a Nigerian to go to Ghana or Togo without too much trouble. Abolition of obstacle to free movement: Ecowas aims at encouraging the free movement of citizens from one member states to another. It helps people move around to do business or visit family.

4. Removing trade blocks: This means stopping rules that make it hard to sell goods to other member countries. Abolition of trade restriction: Ecowas also aims at making sure that goods and services are not subjected to quantitative and administrative restrictions among members state. It makes buying and selling between neighbors very easy.

5. Setting the same tax for outside goods: This means all member countries will charge the same fees when goods come in from places like Europe or America. Establishment of a common tariff: Ecowas also aim at establishing a common tariff and a common commercial policy between member country. This way, no country has an unfair advantage over the others when trading with the world.
