Hello my wonderful students! Today, we are going to learn about something very important in English grammar: Parts of Speech.

Understanding parts of speech is like knowing the different ingredients you need to cook a delicious Jollof Rice. Each ingredient has a role, just like each word has a role in a sentence.

For this lesson, we will focus on Nouns and their types. Are you ready?

What is a Noun?

A Noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, or thing. It's like calling everything around us by its unique name.

Think about it: Your name is a noun, the school you attend is a noun, the phone you are using is a noun.

Examples of Nouns:

Person: Chidi, Aisha, teacher, driver, student

Place: Lagos, Kano, market, school, stadium

Animal: dog, cat, goat, fish, snake

Thing: book, table, car, fan, food

Types of Nouns

There are different types of nouns, and knowing them helps you use English correctly.

1. Proper Nouns

A Proper Noun is a name given to a specific person, place, animal, or thing. These nouns always start with a capital letter.

Example: Tunde is a brilliant student. (Specific person)

Example: My family lives in Abuja. (Specific place)

Example: I saw Mr. Biodun at the National Theatre yesterday.

2. Common Nouns

A Common Noun is a general name for a person, place, animal, or thing. They do not start with a capital letter unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.

Example: The girl bought a book. (General person and thing)

Example: We saw many cars on the road. (General things and place)

Example: The teacher gave the students some homework.

3. Collective Nouns

A Collective Noun is a word used to represent a group of people, animals, or things as a single unit.

Example: A flock of birds flew over our school. (Group of birds)

Example: The team won the match. (Group of players)

Example: A gang of thieves broke into the house.

4. Abstract Nouns

An Abstract Noun names an idea, quality, or feeling that you cannot see, touch, hear, smell, or taste. It exists as a concept.

Example: Love is a beautiful thing. (Feeling)

Example: She showed great courage. (Quality)

Example: We need to bring peace to our community.

5. Concrete Nouns

A Concrete Noun names a person, place, or thing that you can experience with your five senses (see, hear, smell, taste, touch). It is the opposite of an abstract noun.

Example: I can see the danfo on the street. (Can see and touch)

Example: The aroma of the food filled the kitchen. (Can smell, see, taste, touch)

Example: My mother bought a new table for the house.

Well done! Keep practicing, and you will master nouns in no time. See you in the next class!
