Hello my wonderful students! Today, we are going to learn about something very important for your exams and for life: Formal letters.

Understanding Formal Letters

A formal letter is a letter you write when you want to be serious and respectful. It's not like the friendly letters you write to your mummy, daddy, or your friend Tunde. You use formal letters for official business, like when you are talking to a principal, a company, or a government office.

Think about when Chidi wants to apply for a scholarship, or when Aisha needs to complain about a faulty phone she bought in Computer Village, Lagos. They will write a formal letter.

Features of Formal Letters

Formal letters have a special way they are written. They follow a strict format so everyone knows it’s serious. Let's look at the important parts:

Sender's Address and Date: This is your address, the person writing the letter. It goes at the top right corner. Then, you write the date just below it. Example: 23, Broad Street, Lagos. 10th May, 2024.

Recipient's Address: This is the address of the person or office you are sending the letter to. It goes on the left, below the date. Example: The Manager, Zenith Bank Plc, Marina, Lagos.

Salutation: This is how you greet the person. Since it's formal, you use "Dear Sir/Madam" or "Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. [Surname]". You don't say "Hello friend!"

Subject Line: This is a short, clear phrase that tells the reader what your letter is about immediately. It should be underlined or bolded. Example: APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT or COMPLAINT ABOUT FAULTY TELEVISION.

Body of the Letter: This is the main message. Keep it clear, concise, and straight to the point. No waffling, just state your purpose directly. Use polite language, even if you are complaining.

Closing: This is how you end the letter. You use "Yours faithfully" if you started with "Dear Sir/Madam". If you used a name like "Dear Mr. Obi", you use "Yours sincerely".

Signature and Name: Your signature goes above your typed or clearly written full name. Example: (Signature) Chidi Okoro.

Why Formal Letters Are Important

Writing a good formal letter shows you are educated and serious. It helps you achieve your goals, whether it's getting a job, solving a problem, or getting important information. It's a skill you will use for many years to come, even after you leave secondary school. So, practice makes perfect!

Remember, formal letters are not for gossiping or telling stories about your trip in a danfo. They are for serious communication, just like when you're writing to the WAEC office about your results.

Keep practicing and you'll become a master letter writer. You hear? No dulling!
