Writing a number in standard form is just a way to write very big or very small numbers so they are easy to read.
Standard form is a way of writing a number such that it is between 1 and 10 and is then multiplied by a power of 10.
It means we move the decimal point until only one number stays in front of it, then we show how many times we moved it using 10.
In places like Britain, they call this scientific notation.
For example, if you have the number 4235.5, you can write it as 42.355 x 102. This is because 42.355 times 100 gives you 4235.5 back.
But to follow the rule of standard form properly, we must only have one number before the point. So, we write it as 4.2355 x 103.
In some other countries, when they say standard form, they just mean the normal way we write numbers instead of stretching them out.
Looking at the example again, 4235.5 is just a normal number, while 4.2355 x 103 is that same number written in scientific notation.
