Meaning of Probability
Probability is just a way to use numbers to show how sure we are that something will happen.
Probability is a numerical description of how likely an event is to occur or how likely it is that a proposition is true.
It means we use figures to measure if an action will take place or if a statement is correct.
In math, we use numbers from zero to one to show this chance.
Probability is a number between 0 and 1, where, roughly speaking, 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty. The higher the probability of an event, the more likely it is that the event will occur.
So, if the number is zero, it can never happen; if it is one, it must happen.
Tossing a Coin
Think about when you throw a normal coin into the air to start a football match.
A simple example is the tossing of a fair (unbiased) coin.
We use a coin that is not cheated to show how this works.
Because the coin is balanced, the two sides have the same chance of showing up.
The coin is fair, the two outcomes ("heads" and "tails") are both equally probable; the probability of "heads" equals the probability of "tails."
This means the chance for Head is the same as the chance for Tail.
Since there are only two sides, the chance for one side is half.
Since no other outcomes are possible, the probability of either "heads" or "tails" is 1/2 (which could also be written as 0.5 or 50%).
You can write this half as a fraction, a decimal, or a percentage.
Important Points
Note: Probability is how likely something is to happen.
We cannot always be 100 percent sure about what will happen in the future.
Many events can't be predicted with total certainty. The best we can say is how likely they are to happen, using the idea of probability.
Since we do not know the future, we use these calculations to guess the best result.
Key points
- •Probability is a numerical measure of how likely an event is to occur.
- •The value of probability always lies between 0 and 1, inclusive.
- •A probability of 0 indicates impossibility, while a probability of 1 indicates certainty.
- •For equally likely outcomes, the probability of an event is calculated as the number of favorable outcomes divided by the total number of possible outcomes.
